Abstract
A continuous furnace for annealing metal strip especially steel, but also copper, brass, aluminium or magnesium, has a heating zone, a cooling zone and an arrangement of rollers for cold working the steel (see Group XII). The heating zone consists of gas heated incandescent panels which heat the strip by radiation and are movable towards, or away from, the strip for temperature control and may be actuated in response to an electrical temperature-sensitive device. Heating is effected in a neutral atmosphere and a reduction zone may be interpolated between the heating and cooling zones to reduce any oxide formed on the strip during heating. The cooling is carried out in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. 95 per cent N2, 5 per cent H2. A skim pass may be included after the cooling process. For steel the metal is heated to 1300-1800 DEG F. and is cooled slowly to 900 DEG F. and then as quickly as possible to below oxidizing temperature or 300 DEG F. before emerging into the atmosphere. It is stated that strip covered with lubricant may be annealed without cleaning prior to the heat treatment as the oil is vaporized in the heating zone, and passed away into the exhaust gases.
