Abstract

1452062 Cooling furnace charges BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 9 Oct 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 46662/72 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for the heat-treatment of metal articles 14 comprises a vacuum chamber 2 having a water jacket 4 and provided with a heating element 6, heat-reflective shield 8, and a system for supplying a gaseous or liquid coolant to the chamber. During heating of the articles, the coolant, e.g. cold N 2 , is circulated by sump 24 through heat exchangers 20, 22, the valves 18, 28 being closed. When the heating stage is completed, valves 18, 28 are opened and the cold N 2 quenches the articles and continues cooling to below -80‹C. In a modification, (Fig. 2, not shown) the articles are sprayed with liquid coolant, e.g. liquid N 2 , the N 2 vapour being passed through a heat-exchanger (58) prior to re-entry to the chamber.
