Abstract

The zone to be hardened of a workpiece such as a shaft is first heated inductively to above the A 3 temperature and cooled to produce a uniform pearlitic or bainitic structure; it is then reheated to above the As temperature and hardened. After this initial heating part of the heat is abstracted by the core, thereby minimizing the interzonal stresses induced by the final quench. During heat-treatment the workpiece may be straightened by rotation in contact with rolls. Apparatus for carrying out the process consists of a spider, the carriers of which are indexable through at least five working stations such as loading, first heating, cooling, second heating and quenching stations; alternatively there may be a pair of machines in conjunction, each having at least three stations.
