Abstract

662,935. Induction heating. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd., and HOWARD, J. C. Jan. 5, 1950 [Jan. 7, 1349], No. 503/49. Class 39(iii) Apparatus for the heat treatment of metallic strip, and the like, includes two or more inductors or groups of inductors spaced apart along the length of the strip and drawing their power from a common supply, means for advancing the strip and means for adjusting the position of the strip relative to one or more inductors or groups of inductors so as to adjust the distribution of power between the inductors or groups of inductors. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the distance between the inductors 18, 19 and the rollers 13, 14 supporting the strip 10 is varied by screws 21. Hardening may be effected by the inductor 18 in which case quenching nozzles 22 are provided, and this may be followed by tempering by the inductor 19. The roller adjustment may be effected automatically in accordance with either the power taken by each inductor, or the strip temperature. Alternatively, Fig. 2. inductor groups 34, 35 and quenching means 38 are provided. and screws 37 vary the distance between the inductors of each group. Specification 600,673 is referred to.
