Abstract

706,636. Hardening metal strip. LOO, R. VAN. June 25, 1951 [July 13, 1950], No. 14980/51. Class 72 [Also in Group XXX] In a process for continuously hardening metal strip, c'lamping means maintaining the portion of strip under treatment in a state of mechanical tension are located each side of a hardening zone, disposed transversely to the direction of motion of the strip, in which heating and subsequent quenching is effected. As shown in Fig. 1. rollers 8 and 9 constitute the clamping means, the rollers 9 being advanced to tension the strip 5 as it passes the burners 1 'and 2 supplied with gas and air, and water nozzles 3 and 4. Additional and smaller burners 6 and 7 may be used to temper the strip after hardening, and straighteners 14 and 15 are positioned before and after the hardening device. As shown in Fig. 2, the rollers 8 and 9 are replaced by pairs of clamps 10, 12 and 11, 13. These clamps reciprocate horizontally in pairs, at least one pair always gripping the strip and carrying it at constant speed to the right.
