Abstract

710,426. Induction heating. THERMAL INDUCTION, Ltd. Aug. 22, 1952 [Aug. 22, 1951], No. 19780/51. Class 39 (3) A process for the continuous hardening by heat treatment progressively along the length of an elongated metal body by induction heating, includes an inductor coil 6 having several turns 8 either in a multi-layer or in a closely pitched single layer to provide an intensive heating portion, and further turns 9 of a single layer widely pitched or of broader section forming a reduced heating portion, and quenching is effected at 10 on emergence of the work 7 from the turns 9. In Fig. 5 a plate 14 is initially heated by closely spaced conductors 15 and finally heated by more widely spaced conductors 16 and is then quenched. A further higher input density coil section may be provided at the work exit end to counteract the cooling effect of the quenchant. The heating effect may also be varied by having different gaps between the heating conductors and the work.
