[Class 56] In the tempering of glass a net of tension is made in the core of the glass whereby there results an invisible pattern in the form of a network of supertempered glass which keeps in tempered equilibrium all the other parts which are of lesser temper. This may be done by heating the glass throughout its thickness along a network of spaced zones and then cooling the outer layers whilst temporarily continuing the heating of the inner layers, or the glass may be subjected to uniform preheating and the core maintained at high temperature by heating along a network of spaced zones extending transversely through the glass while the outer surfaces of the zones are subjected to sudden cooling. The heating may be by high frequency induction between electrodes and the cooling jets or suction orifices may be formed in the electrodes. Alternatively the initial heating may be effected in an oven and the glass subsequently passed between electrodes for induction heating of the network, the electrodes also carrying the cooling means.
