Abstract

469,994. Tempering glass. PILKING- TON BROS., Ltd., and MITFORD, J. B. Jan. 2, 1936, No. 126. [Class 56] Relates to a process for tempering glass articles of irregular shape or thickness in such a way that stresses in the glass are uniform at all parts of the article. According to the invention, the article is heated and chilled to temper it, and it is then maintained at a predetermined temperature, at which the glass is just able to yield plastically, for a time sufficient to reduce the maximum stress in the article to the desired value. The best temperature and time for the treatment of any particular glass is ascertained by subjecting sample articles to thermal or mechanical shock and examining the size of the fragments of the broken articles.
