[Class 56] A glass sheet or article is so tempered that the ratio of maximum compression at the surface to the maximum tension in the body is less than two. For this purpose, the heated glass is chilled in a number of stages in each of which the chilling is more rapid than at the end of the preceding stage. Methods of chilling which fulfil this condition are.described in the Specification.
