[Class 56] A glass sheet or article is so tempered that the ratio of the maximum compressive strain at the surface to the maximum tensile strain in the body of the glass is four or more. For this purpose, the heated glass is first chilled very rapidly and then, while the central portion of the glass is still plastic, is chilled at a lower rate. Methods of chilling are described in the Specification. Specification. 454,374 is referred to.
