Abstract

An alloy of the composition .Nb.2-3% .Zr and impurities.the balance, is solution treated at a temperature above the alpha/alpha plus beta transition temperature, e.g. at 800-860 DEG C., cold worked to a reduction between 10% and 50% and aged at a temperature in the range 470-520 DEG C. Prior to solution treating the alloy may be cold worked to a reduction of 1-50%, e.g. a reduction in two stages of 25% each with intermediate annealing. Reference is made to the production of tubes for use in water-cooled nuclear reactors, the tubes being straightened after solution treatment and before ageing to minimize the effect of distortion due to quenching. The treatment sequence given above may be preceded by hot-forging at about 950 DEG C. and hot-rolling at about 1000 DEG C.
