Abstract

1,226,768. Heat-treating nickel alloy catalysts. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. May 27, 1968 [May 29, 1967], No.25342/68. Heading C7A. A binary nickel alloy in which (a) the solubility of nickel in the second metal varies with temperature (b) an intermetallic compound or phase is formed and (c) the content of second metal lies between that amount giving a single nickel-rich solid solution at ambient temperature and that which forms the intermetallic compound or phase, is solution treated, quenched, mechanically worked and heat-treated isothermally to bring about precipitation of a second phase. Preferred compositions contain 1% to 4% of beryllium or 4% to 9% of aluminium; the former are solution treated at 1100‹C. and the latter at 1300‹C., for about 100 hours in each case. As exemplified the final heattreatment is carried out at 450‹C. for nickelberyllium and 600‹ C. for nickel-aluminium, the precise conditions be chosen to produce maximum activity of the catalyst as determined experimentally. During working the alloys may be subjected to an additional anneal at 1100‹ to 1350‹ C. followed by quenching. All high temperature treatments are carried out under vacuum.
