Abstract

578,222. Alloys; heat treatment. BRADBURY, T. F., and PEAKE, T. J. Nov. 17, 1941, No. 14747. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] An aluminium alloy comprises 4.7-7.5 per cent of copper, 0.01-0.5 of titanium, 0.01-1.0 of manganese, not exceeding 0.3 of each of iron and silicon and aluminium the remainder, provided that if the copper content is less than 5.51 per cent or the manganese is above 0.49 per cent, the combined total of iron and silicon does not exceed 0.25 per cent. One or more improving elements, e.g., sodium, silver, barium, zinc, the rare earths, vanadium, niobium, chromium, tellurium, cobalt, zirconium, antimony, beryllitun, bismuth, boron, cadmium, calcium, lead, lithium, molybdenum, tungsten, thallium and thorium may be present up to a total of 1 per cent and not more than 0.5 per cent of any one of them. Preferably the total of elements in the alloy other than copper, titanium, manganese and aluminium should not exceed 0.25 per cent. The alloy in the form of a sand or die casting or a forging is solution treated at up to 545‹ C. for a period up to 40 hours and may, after quenching, 30 age-hardened at 160-180‹ C. for 12 to uhours. The alloys may be used for the manor facture of a cast internal combustion piston be cylinder head, or a mechanically worked part of an internal combustion engine or machine or for a cast part of an airframe. According to the Provisional Specification, the upper limit of the copper content may be 9.0 per cent, the silicon 1.0 and the iron 0.6 per cent.
