Abstract

An aluminium base alloy, particularly suitable for such parts as pistons and cylinder heads of internal - combustion engines, contains the following elements in the following proportions: magnesium 2.55-10.00 per cent, nickel 2.00-6.00 per cent, silicon 0.02-1.20 per cent, iron 0.02-0.60 per cent, manganese 0.01-3.50 per cent, aluminium the remainder, but so that either manganese exceeds 0.21 per cent or magnesium exceeds 4.01 per cent when silicon is in the range 0.50-1.20 per cent. The alloy may also contain copper not exceeding 3.00 per cent and/or one or more of antimony, cerium, calcium, tin and zirconium up to a total of 1.75 per cent, but without calcium when copper is over 1.00 per cent. One or more of titanium, niobium and boron not exceeding a total of 0.50 per cent may be present and the alloy may also include one or more of cobalt, chromium, silver, molybdenum, beryllium, bismuth, tungsten, vanadium, gallium, thorium, lithium, tantalum, cadmium, lanthanum, thallium, tellurium, lead, yttrium and zinc up to a total not exceeding 1.25 per cent and individually not exceeding 0.95 per cent. One or more of sodium, potassium and barium not exceeding a total of 0.20 per cent may also be included. The alloy may be used as a sand-casting, die-casting or as a worked part. Machine parts made of the alloy may be subjected to an ageing treatment only or to a solution heat-treatment followed by either natural or artificial ageing or it may be used without any heat treatment.
