Abstract

An alloy, particularly suitable for the manufacture of bearings, contains 0.02-10.0 per cent silicon, 20.0-75.0 per cent tin, the remainder being aluminium. The alloy may also include one or more of the following elements, antimony not exceeding 12.0 per cent, nickel not exceeding 9.0 per cent, manganese not exceeding 6.0 per cent, silver not exceeding 10.0 per cent, zinc not exceeding 12.0 per cent, iron not exceeding 3.0 per cent, magnesium not exceeding 5.0 per cent, lead not exceeding 10.0 per cent, copper not exceeding 6.0 per cent, cadmium not exceeding 10.0 per cent, the maximum total of these elements not exceeding 15.0 per cent. One or more of arsenic, beryllium, calcium, cerium, chromium, bismuth, cobalt, niobium, lanthanum, lithium, molybdenum, tantalum, tellurium, thallium, thorium, titanium, tungsten, vanadium and phosphorus may be present but the quantity of these elements must not exceed 5.0 per cent in total and 4.5 per cent individually. One or more of boron, zirconium, barium, sodium, potassium and yttrium may be present up to a total not exceeding 0.35 per cent. The alloy may be used in the cast condition or it may be given a stabilising treatment.
