Abstract

An alloy suitable for pump parts, bearings, bearing linings and sliding parts has a composition within the following range in per cent by weight. .Al.at least 20 .Si.0.15-16.0 .Be.traces to 10.0 .Zn.at least 30 The alloy may contain one or more of Ca, Na, Sr, Ba, Cd, Sn, V, Mo, Mn, Ce, K and known incidental ingredients such as up to 3 Fe, these optional constituents not exceeding 6 in total. Cu may be present in the range 0.05-6. If Cu is present in amount 2-8, Zn may be as low as 20 and Al up to 75, Si may be in the range 0.05-16 and Be is preferably 0.75-10. There may also be present one or more of Ni, Cr, Mg, B, W, Ti up to 6 in total. Part of the Si may be replaced by one or more of P, C, B in the range 0.005-6 the total of these elements with Si being 0.05-16. Certain of the optional constituents may be introduced into the melt as hydrides. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys in which the maximum Al content is 80 and in which Ni, Ti and W may each be present up to 5 and Mg and B may each be present up to 6.
