Abstract
An aluminium-base alloy has the following composition: Si 0.02-10.00 per cent, Sn 8.01-19.99 per cent, Al the remainder. The alloy may contain one or more of the following elements within the specified individual ranges and not exceeding 15.00 per cent in total: Sb up to 12.00 per cent, Ni up to 9.00 per cent, Mn up to 6.00 per cent, Ag up to 10.00 per cent, Zn up to 12.00 per cent Mg up to 5.00 per cent, Fe up to 3.00 per cent, Cu up to 6.00 per cent, Pb up to 10.00 per cent, Cd up to 10.00 per cent, but so that the total content of Mn and Ni will be less than 0.50 per cent when the content of Si is 1.50 per cent or less. The alloy may contain one or more of the elements As, Be, Ca, Ce (added as commercial metal or as mischmetall), Cr, Bi, Co, Nb, La (including any added as mischmetall), Li, Mo, Ta, Te, Tl, Th, Ti, W, V and P not exceeding a total of 5.00 per cent or 4.50 per cent individually. One or more of the elements B, Zr, Ba, Na, K, Yt may be present up to a total of 1.00 per cent or individually not exceeding 0.75 per cent, traces of C may be present as an impurity. The alloy may be used in the "as cast" condition or it may be given a stabilizing heat treatment, e.g., at 100 DEG C. to 200 DEG C. for about four hours. The alloy may be used as a bearing metal in any machine or internal combustion engine.
