Abstract
A precipitation-hardenable copper-base alloy has the following composition:-Al 6.1-8.5 per cent, Ni 6.0-15.0 per cent, Fe 6.0-12.0 per cent, Cu the balance. The alloy may also contain Mn up to 2.5 per cent, Cr up to 0.7 per cent, P up to 0.05 per cent, Li up to 0.01 per cent, Co up to 5.0 per cent, Ag up to 0.2 per cent, Cd up to 0.5 per cent, Be up to 2.25 per cent, Ti up to 4.0 per cent, Zr up to 1.0 per cent, Pb up to 0.05 per cent, Sn up to 0.2 per cent, Zn up to 0.5 per cent, Si up to 0.25 per cent and Mg up to 0.1 per cent. The alloy is solution treated at a temperature below its melting point, preferably at not less than 900 DEG C, and precipitation hardened at 400-600 DEG C with intermediate cooling at a rate sufficient to ensure supersaturation. The alloy may be cooled from the solution temperature directly to the precipitation hardening temperature. Specification 485,432 is referred to.
