Abstract

A bearing is formed of an alloy having a composition within the following range .Zn.at least 20.per cent .Al.at least 30.per cent .Si.0.1 - 3.2.per cent .Cu.0.05 - 6.per cent The alloy may also contain up to 2.5 per cent of C and up to 2.5 per cent B. One or more of the following elements may be present up to 6 per cent in total, Mg, Ni. Cr, Ti, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cd, Mn, Sn, V, Mo, Sb, W, Ce, P, Na and K. Fe is not present except as an impurity. The melt during casting is preferably cooled in stages, first locally then as to the rest, e.g. by partly removing the mold when the outer portions of the casting have solidified and the rapidly cooling the exposed regions.
