Abstract

A method of improving the toughness of aluminium-zinc alloys containing at least 20 per cent aluminium which on solidifying tend to produce dendrites, comprises annealing the alloy at a temperature between 300 DEG C. and the melting point for 1-3 hours and cooling at a rate not exceeding 5 DEG C. per minute. The cooling may be carried out immediately after casting or the casting may be cooled and reheated to the annealing temperature. The alloys treated may contain 20-50 per cent Al; up to 5,0 per cent Cu; up to 0,2 per cent Mg; and the balance Zn and unavoidable impurities. The preferred annealing range is 300-400 DEG C. and the cooling rate below 1 DEG C. per minute.
