Abstract

A magnesium alloy for casting contains from 2 to 10% of zinc and from 0.5 to 5% of copper as essential constituents, aluminium being substantially absent. The alloy as cast has a fine grain size, making a grain refinement step unnecessary and has favourable mechanical properties, especially after heat treatment involving a solution treatment, hot water quench and ageing at 120-250 DEG C. Other constituents such as up to 2% manganese and/ or up to 3% Bi, 1% Sb, 2% Sn, 5% Cd, 1% Si and 1% rare earth metals; can be added to improve particular properties.
