Abstract

Aluminium-base alloys suitable for use as bearing materials have the following composition: Si 0.2-10.0 per cent, Bi 0.1-5.0 per cent, Cr 0.1-0.8 per cent, the balance being Al and impurities such as Fe up to 0.5 per cent. The alloy may be formed by conventional methods, master alloys with Al being used to introduce Cr and Si, the Bi being added to the melt which is cast in metal or graphite moulds. The alloy may be solution treated at 900-1050 DEG F. for 8-15 hours, quenched in water and precipitation hardened, preferably at 300-400 DEG F. for 5-10 hours. A bearing made of the alloy may have an overlay of lead or a lead-base alloy.
