Abstract
An aluminium-base alloy suitable for use as bearing material has the composition Si 0,5-9 per cent, Cd 0,2-5 per cent, Cr 0,1-0,5 per cent, Al and impurities the balance. The impurities include Fe, which may be present up to 0,5 per cent of the alloy. In may be a constituent of the alloy in amount from 0,03-0,5 per cent. Al, Si and Cr may be fused at a temperature of about 1200 DEG F., the Si and Cr being used as their alloys with Al; the melt is removed from the furnace. In and Cd are added simultaneously or successively and the melt is stirred and cast at a temperature which should not exceed 1400 DEG F. The cast alloy may be heat treated between 900 DEG F. and 1050 DEG F. for eight to fifteen hours and then quenched in water. In this condition it can readily be rolled to strip. Bearings made of the alloy may have a thin overlay of Pb or a Pb-base alloy.
