Abstract

Silicon-iron alloys have the following compositions:- .Si%.C%.Ti%.S% .3.25.0.035.0.03.0.026 .3.25.0.03.0.05.0.018 .3.25.0.013.0.05.0.017 .3.50.0.036.0.043.0.028 .3.10.0.033.0.047.0.030 .3.47.0.033.0.026.0.023 .3.10.0.029.0.038.0.040 the balance in each case being iron Slabs are cut from the above alloys, heated to 1000 DEG C in dry hydrogen and hot rolled to 80 mils. thick sheet. The hot rolled sheet is annealed at 900 DEG C for 1/2 hour in dry hydrogen or a vacuum and after cooling cold rolled to 25 mils. thickness. The cold rolled sheet is annealed in dry hydrogen or vacuum at 860 DEG C for one minute the sheet being in the heating zone for 3 1/2 minutes. After cooling, the annealed sheet is cold rolled to 12 mill. thickness and decarbonized by heating for 5 minutes at 800 DEG C in wet hydrogen-the decarbonized sheet is heated in a metal retort in a furnace with dry hydrogen (-90 DEG dewpoint) passing through the retort as the temperature is increased at 100 DEG C per hour to 1200 DEG C holding this temperature for 8 hours, cooling at 100 DEG C per hour to 600 DEG C, and furnace cooling to about 300 DEG C, at which point the retort is removed from the furnace.
