Abstract
A process for producing highly grain oriented silicon steel for magnetic purposes comprises heating a silicon steel ingot containing 2.5% to 4% silicon to a temperature above 2300 DEG F., e.g. between 2300 DEG F. and 2475 DEG F. hot working the heated ingot into hot rolled strip of 0.060 to 0.10 inch in thickness before the temperature drops below 1600 DEG F., the hot working from heated ingot to hot rolled strip being a direct hot working without an intermediate reheating of the steel, and thereafter subjecting said hot rolled strip to one or more cold rolling treatments and a final high temperature box anneal. The steel strip may be subjected to an intermediate anneal subsequent to the cold rolling consisting of an open anneal between 1600 DEG F. and 1850 DEG F. A second cold rolling step may be followed by a decarburizing anneal between 1400 DEG F. and 1550 DEG F. including the open anneal. The final box anneal takes place in dry hydrogen between 2100 DEG F. and 2200 DEG F. A silicon steel so treated has a composition within the following percentage ranges by weight:-Si 2.9-3.4; C 0.02-0.035; Mn 0.035-0.1; P 0.05-0.02; S 0.05-0.025; Ni 0.03-0.15; Al 0.05 max.; Cu 0.05-0.3; Sn 0.005-0.02; Fe balance. An alloy disclosed having the above composition also includes Co 0.011%. Specification 442,211 and U.S.A. Specification 2,599,340 are referred to.
