Abstract
In the manufacture of sheets of iron silicon alloys, the hot rolled alloys are cold rolled to an intermediate gauge, subjected to a heat treatment to effect a recrystallization, preferably at a temperature between 1500 and 1850 DEG C. cold rolled to a final gauge and finally heat treated in the solid state to effect recrystallization at a temperature above that of the first heat treatment preferably at a temperature between 1600 and 2100 DEG F. Prior to the initial cold rolling the hot rolled strip is subjected to a heat treatment to effect a complete recrystallization preferably at a temperature of 1400 to 1700 DEG F., and after the final heat treatment the material is batch annealed at 1200-1450 DEG F., either in sheet form or after punching, shearing or stamping. The heating is carried out in a reducing atmosphere and is followed by cooling in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. In an example, a hot rolled silicon steel having a silicon content of 3,6 per cent or less and a thickness of ,065.. ,01 inch is heated to 1400-1700 DEG F., cold rolled to a thickness of ,025-,04 inch, heated to 1500-1850 DEG F., cold rolled to the final gauge and then heated to 1600-2100 DEG F. The sheet material produced has a uniform grain structure of random orientation the grain size being 1,5 mm. or less and a magnetic moment approaching that of a single crystal.
