Abstract

A steel containing less than 5% of any element other than iron and from 0.8 to 1% of carbon is successively annealed and slowly cooled from 900 to 1000 DEG C., 800 to 900 DEG C. and then heated for 4 to 48 hours at 625 to 715 DEG C. The steel may contain an austenitic grain refining additions, such as aluminium, titanium, or an alloy containing 49% silicon 21.6% aluminium and 28% calcium, added at the rate of 0.5 to 5 kgs. per metric ton.
