Abstract
A steel containing in percentage by weight .C.0.15-0.5 .Mn.0.7-1.8 .Si.0.5-1.5 .Fe.balance is hot rolled at 750-950 DEG C. and is then rapidly cooled from the rolling temperature to about 500 DEG C., the rate of cooling preferably being at least 30% greater than the rate under normal ambient conditions. The steel may also include 0.15-0.5% of chromium, and/or 0.1-0.2% of aluminium together with 0.05-0.2% of titanium or vanadium, such compositions forming the subject of independent claims to compositions only. The rolling process preferably uses a roll pressure high enough to produce 12-15% or more reduction in cross-sectional area, particularly during each of the last three passes. It is stated that bars, rods, tubes, wire and plate may be made from the compositions of the invention.
