Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the toughness and fatigue characteristic of structural bar steel subjected to only hot forging without reheat treatment by subjecting a steel containing specific amounts of C, Si, Mn, V, S, and Al and having a specific carbon equivalent to a hot forging and then to a specifically designated cooling process.
CONSTITUTION: A steel containing 0.30W0.60% C, 0.15W0.35% Si, 0.60W2.0% Mn, 0.03W0.20% V, 0.02W0.12% S, 0.005W0.05% Al, and Fe and having a carbon equivalent of 0.53% or more, as shown by the formula, is cast into ingots. The cast ingots are hot-forged into a desired bar steel and then cooled at a cooling rate of 0.7°C or less/sec in the temperature range of 1,000W500°C, during which V present in the steel composition separates out in the form of the carbo-nitride of V to cause strength to rise, and also combines with C and N in the matrix to lower the amounts of the adjoining C and N, thus permitting the next ferrite-transformation to be easily formed.
