Abstract
The physical proportion of steels containing from 0.005 to 0.050% columbium, 0.02 to 0.60% carbon, 0.005 to 0.5% silicon, and 0.15 to 1.6% manganese are improved by the process of heating such a steel to 2300 DEG to 2450 DEG F., rolling it, and rapidly cooling it by water spray from the range 1550 DEG to 1750 DEG F. to the range 1050 DEG to 1200 DEG F. The process is particularly suited to milled, semi-milled, and rimmed steels. The improvement in yield strength of such a steel after the addition of columbium is shown by an example in which the yield strength of a steel, including 0.36% C, 1.55% Mn and 0.22% Si was raised from 69700 lb./in.2 to 85300 lb./in.2, by the addition of 0.036% Cb.
