Abstract

A magnesium base alloy has the following composition: Ca 3.00-20.00 per cent. Sn and/or Bi 0.50-12.00 per cent, Mg the remainder. The alloy may contain one or more of the following elements: Mn up to 2.50 per cent, Al up to 10.00 per cent, Si up to 1.50 per cent, Fe up to 1.0 per cent, and may include up to 7.00 per cent of one or more of Ag, Cd, Ce, Ga, Li, In, Pb, Tl, Zn, Zr the total of these elements not exceeding 10.00 per cent. One or more of Sb, As, Ba, Be, Cr, Co, Nb, Cu, La, Mo, Ni, Ta, Te, Ti, W, Th, Yt and B may be present in the alloy up to 1.50 per cent individually and not exceeding 2.00 per cent in total. Up to 0.50 per cent in total of one or more of Na, K, Sr may also be included. The alloy may be subjected to a stabilizing heat treatment at not over 400 DEG C. for not more than 30 hours, or it may be solution treated at a temperature over 400 DEG C. for at least 10 minutes and aged either naturally or artificially at a temperature not exceeding 350 DEG C. for at least 1 hour.
