Abstract

A method of heat treating an alloy containing at least 35% nickel and hardening elements comprises solution treating the alloy at 1150 DEG C. to 1250 DEG C. to obtain a saturated solid solution, cooling at the rate of 0.50 DEG C. to 5.0 DEG C. per minute to a given temperature within the range 800 to 1100 DEG C. and cooling from that temperature, the cooling to the given temperature being effected at such a rate that there is little or no migration of excess precipitate or intermetallic compounds to the grain boundaries. The alloy may be rapidly cooled from the given temperature to room temperature and may then be aged in the range 980 DEG C. to 1060 DEG C. After cooling from the given temperature the alloy may be reheated to 750 DEG C. to 930 DEG C. The alloys treated may fall within the following compositions: .Al.0.1- 9.0% .Ti.0.1- 6.5% .Cr.5.0-30.0% .Co.0 -30% .Mo.1 -15% .W.0 -15% .Nb.0 - 7% .Hf.0 - 8% .Ta.0 - 5% .V.0 - 6% .B.0 - 0.3% .Zr.0 - 1.2% .C.0.01-0.30% .Mn.0 -1.0% .Si.0 -1.5% .Fe.0 -5% .Be.0 -0.5% .N.0 -0.15% .Cu.0 -0.9% .Rare earths.0 -0.2% .S.0.01% max .P.0.02% max .Ca.0.08% max .Mg.0.15% max the balance being at least 35% Ni, the combined Al and Ti is at least 5% and more than 1% of Mo or Mo plus W, Nb, Hf, Ta, V, B, Zr, and Be but none of these elements must exceed the amount given above.
