Abstract

An Mg-base alloy resistant to the effect of air or oxidizing gases, particularly at elevated temperatures approaching the melting point of the alloy, has a composition within the following range .Be.0.002 - 0.1.per cent .Al.0.25 - 1.1.per cent .Mg.the remainder. The alloy may also contain Ca 0.02-0.44 per cent. The alloy may be prepared by adding a pre-alloy of Al and Be to molten Mg, the pre-alloy containing for example 5-10 per cent Be. Ca may be added as such or as a pre-alloy of Mg and Ca. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys of Mg with Be 0.002-0.1 per cent, with or without one or both of Ca 0.002-0.4 per cent and Al 0.25-3.0 per cent.
