Abstract

Steels which are to have good cutting properties over a wide range of cutting speeds are produced by adjusting the oxygen content of a steel melt to between 0.004 and 0.1% and then treating the melt with an alloy consisting of .Si.45-90% .Ca.0.5-40% .Al.up to 4% .Mn.0.5-8% .Fe.(if any) the remainder, the composition and amount of the alloy added being adjusted in relation to the oxygen content of the melt to produce in the steel uniformly distributed non-metallic inclusions comprising more than 50% SiO2, 0.5-25% CaO and not more than 45% Al2O3.
