Abstract

An alloy consists of 50-94% of a cast iron (defined as an alloy containing up to 3.3% Si, up to 1% Mn, the balance being iron and carbon, together with incidental impurities), 4-30% Al, 2-8% total of one or more of Mg, Cu or Zn with optional additions of 0.5-5.0%Cr, 0.5-8.0% Ni, Mo, Ti or V. The alloy may be prepared by adding the molten cast iron component to the other metal(s) or the metal(s) may be partially blown into and partially added directly to the cast iron bath.
