Abstract

A ternary alloy having good tensile properties at high temperatures and a low capture cross-section for thermal neutrons, has a composition within the following range Nb 1.0-5.0 per cent, one of Al, Mo and V 0.1-2.0 per cent, Zr the remainder the proportion of Nb exceeding that of Al, Mo or V. Examples referred to in the Specification were prepared by drilling holes in pieces of Zr, putting suitable quantities of the other two components in the holes and filling the holes with Zr chips. The pieces were then melted in a graphite crucible in a high-frequency induction furnace under the pressure of less than 10 microns of mercury. Alternatively an arc-melting furnace may be used. Melting in a graphite crucible may result in a C content in the alloy of up to 0.5.
