Abstract

A zirconium-base alloy, having high resistance to corrosion and capable of being readily hot and cold worked, has a composition within the following range: Sn 0.5-2.5 per cent, one or more Fe, Nn and Cr 0.01-2.0 per cent in total with or without Hf up to 3.0 per cent, impurities less than 0.5 per cent, Zr the remainder. The alloy may be made by melting together the individual constituents in an arc melting furance using a water-cooled copper crucible, a tungsten-tipped electrode, and an atmosphere of purified argon or helium. Alternatively zirconium may be initially melted as above and pellets prepared by alloying together the other constituents are then added.
