Abstract

511,137. Alloys; heat-treatment. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Feb. 9, 1938, Nos. 4114 and 23468. [Class 82(i)] A binary or multiple magnesium alloy contains 0.05 to 2.0 per cent. of zirconium, any additional alloying components present being such as are incapable of forming high melting compounds with the zirconium. One or more of the elements zinc, cadmium, cerium, silver, thallium, thorium, copper, bismuth, beryllium, lead and calcium may also be present, preferably in amounts which do not individually exceed 5.0 per cent. A quaternary alloy comprises 0.05 to 2.0 per cent. of zirconium together with zinc and cadmium, the balance being magnesium. The zirconium may be added to the molten magnesium base alloy. The alloys may be annealed at temperatures between 150‹ and 400‹C., and the binary magnesium zirconium alloys may be heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen to a temperature between 300‹ and 600‹C., preferably about 450‹C. Specification 511,291 is referred to.
