Abstract

An alloy consisting of 10-20 per cent molybdenum, 5-10 per cent zirconium and the balance uranium, the latter being enriched if desired with the isotope U235 or U233 may be made by melting the three metals on a water-cooled copper hearth in an atmosphere of purified argon. The alloy is suitable for use as fuel in nuclear reactors, and is said to possess high tensile strength at temperatures up to 800 DEG C. and to have greater oxidation resistance than uranium. Its hardness may be increased by a heat treatment for an hour at 1100 DEG C.
