Abstract

A binary alloy of uranium containing 0.1-10 per cent by weight of niobium or zirconium may be used in nuclear reactors. Examples are given of the production of the alloys by melting together uranium and zirconium hydride in a vacuum or uranium and niobium in an argon atmosphere at low pressure, the constituents in each case being melted and mixed in a beryllium oxide crucible. Reference is made to heat treatment in the uranium-zirconium alloy to improve its tensile properties and hardness by heating at 900 DEG C. for two hours in a vacuum furnace, quenching in water, reheating at 300 DEG C. for two hours and again quenching. The uranium-niobium alloy is heated at 900 DEG C. in a hydrogen atmosphere for two hours, quenched in cold water, heated to 300-700 DEG C. a number of times while wrapped in copper foil, followed by quenching in cold water.
