Abstract

A high temperature and corrosion resistant material is obtained by forming a skeletal body of a high melting point metal boride, infiltrating with a metal or alloy and oxidising the infiltrant to a high melting point oxide. The boride may be partly replaced by an oxide of silicon, beryllium, zirconium or aluminium, or a refractory carbide or silicide, e.g. of titanium or zirconium. In the example an aluminium silicon alloy is oxidised to sillimanite.
