Abstract

A dispersion of one or more oxides in a metal or alloy matrix is produced by blowing through a molten bath containing both the matrix and oxide-forming metals a mixture of oxidizing and reducing gases in proportions such that the desired oxides are formed while the matrix metal(s) remains unoxidized. Formation of dispersions of alumina in copper and in nickel, and thoria in bismuth or lead/bismuth alloy, are described. Specification 842,173 is referred to.
