Abstract
568,275. Alloys. BYRNE, E. L. W. (American Smelting & Refining Co.). Aug. 6, 1943, No. 12752. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] A process of increasing the softening temperature of high conductivity copper without adversely affecting the conductivity consists in adding not more than 0.1 per cent of cadmium, heating the cadmium-bearing copper to a temperature which effects the reduction of any cadmium oxide and forms a solid solution of cadmium in the copper, and quenching the alloy to maintain the cadmium in solid solution. The amount of cadmium added is preferably 0.01-0.1 per cent, and the heating is preferably effected between 700‹ and 1000‹ C. The copper employed may be '' tough pitch " copper, which may contain 0.025-0.07 per cent of oxygen.
