Abstract

514,941. Alloys; annealing SPARLING, W. J. March 16, 1938, No. 8170. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Cast iron containing 0.5 per cent. or more of copper and 0.6 per cent. or more of manganese is subjected to heat-treatment above and below the critical range in order to produce uniformly distributed spheroidized cementite, and is further heat-treated within the critical range to cause some or all of the spheroidized cementite to migrate to the ferrite grain boundaries. The upper limits of copper and manganese may be 1.5 and 1.1 per cent. respectively, and the heat-treatment may comprise heating to 1,600- 1,800‹F., quenching to below the critical temperature, reheating to 1,250-1,300‹F., and further heating at 1,325-1,360‹F.
