Abstract
540,795. Heat-treating alloys. PFEIL, L. B. April 22, 1940, No. 7255. [Classes 72 and 82; (i)] In the heat treatment of alloys consisting principally of nickel and copper and containing a dispersible constituent which, when the alloy is heated, goes into a solid solution that is stable or meta-stable over a wide range of temperature, the alloy is heated to cause the constituent to go into solution, cooled to a temperature that is lower than this but above that at which appreciable precipitation of the dispersible constituent begins, quenched or reheated to bring about precipitation-hardening. An alloy containing 4-15 per cent. of tin, 4-20 of nickel and 0-20 of zinc or other element, the rest copper is soaked at 700-850‹C., cooled to a temperature within the range 550-650‹C., quenched and then re-heated. The treatment of an alloy containing 50-85 per cent. of nickel 45-10 of copper and 2-4 of aluminium with or without 0.25-1.0 of titanium, and when there is lead contamination 0.05-0.5 of zirconium, is referred to.
