Abstract
578,283. Copper base alloys. BRITISH NON-FERROUS METAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, LIDDIARD, E. A. G., BAILEY, G. E., and MAY, R. Sept. 30, 1943, No. 16085. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Alloys, resistant to attack by circulating water, which alloys consist of copper, 2-12.5 per cent of nickel, 0.5-3 per cent of iron and optionally up to 1 per cent of manganese and or small percentages of phosphorus when this is used as a deoxidiser, are homogenised by being held at a sufficiently elevated temperature for a time sufficient to allow the iron to become uniformly disseminated in the alloy. Such heat treatment may be at 900‹ C.-950‹ C. for one to twelve hours and the alloy may then be quenched. The treatment of such alloys containing 9-10 per cent of nickel and 1.75-2 per cent of iron by heating to not less than 900‹ C. and quenching, and of such alloys containing 5 per cent of nickel and 0.5-1.5 per cent of iron by heating to not less than 900‹ C. is mentioned. Specification 577,065 is referred to. Reference is made in the Provisional Specification to further heat treatment to prevent the subsequent precipitation of an iron rich phase when the alloys are reheated to 500‹ C.- 600‹ C. This treatment consists in heating to temperatures not usually less than 900‹ C. for not less than 1 hour and quenching.
