Abstract
547,107. Heat-treating cast iron. ELECTRO METALLURGICAL CO. March 28, 1941, No. 4168. Convention date, May 9, 1940. [Class 72] To improve the responsiveness of white cast iron to the subsequent annealing treatment to produce malleable iron, the iron is first heated to 100-400‹C. for a period of 10-200 hours, e.g. at 130‹C. or 245‹C. for 65 hours. The heated iron may be subsequently held at malleabilising temperatures to produce temper carbon. In an example a cast iron containing 2.54 per cent. of combined carbon and 0.06 graphite, 0.65 of silicon, 0.42 of manganese, 0.04 of sulphur and 0.12 of phosphorus was heated for 65 hours at 245‹C. and then subjected to an annealing comprising heating to 955‹C. for 1 hour and holding it there for 4 hours, cooling to 788‹C. in 1 hour and then to. 650‹C. in 9 hours.
