Abstract

544,678. Heat treating sillicon steel sheets. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Armco International Corporation). Oct. 17, 1940, No. 15408. [Class 72] [Also in Group XII] For the purpose of decreasing the brittleness of silicon steel sheets, they are annealed in an atmosphere which at least as early as the soaking period is kept low in hydrogen and any source of hydrogen such as water. The atmosphere may be mainly nitrogen and any hydrogen produced is oxidized by the addition of air and the product removed preferably during the circulation of the atmosphere, during which hydrogen is also removed. During the middle or latter portion of the heating up period the atmosphere is maintained in a nearly neutral condition with respect to iron and iron oxide by adding oxygen so as to maintain a substantially non-reactive balance of CO and CO 2 . The annealing may be carried out at a temperature above 1350‹ C. and terminated with a slow cooling within the temperature range 1650-1350‹F. Specification 429,940 is referred to.
