538,439. Thermo-aluminic processes; alloys. UDY, M. J. Dec. 28, 1939, No. 32981. Convention date, Jan. 28. [Class 82 (i)] An exothermic mixture for use in the production of metallic iron consists of ferric oxide chemically combined with calcium oxide and a silicon-containing reducing agent such as low carbon ferro-silicon, or silicon alloyed with other metals such as nickel, aluminium, magnesium, and calcium. In the production of alloys such as iron-chromium alloys, the reducing agent used is chrome silicon or ferro-chrome silicon. The exothermic mixture may also be caused to react with molten metals to produce alloys or may be used to alter the composition of an iron by dilution with pure iron by igniting the mixture in contact with the molten iron. An oxidizing agent such as sodium nitrate, sodium chlorate or manganese dioxide may be added to the mixture and the calcium oxide content of the latter may be greater than.that equivalent to one molecule of that substance to one atom of silicon.
