Abstract
514,472. Alloys. UDY, M. J. March 8, 1938, No. 7281. Convention date, Jan. 22. [Class 82 (i)] Chromium-iron or steel alloys are made by the reaction of a mixture containing lime, iron oxide, and ferro-chrome-silicon having a chromium-iron ratio of less than 2 : 1 and containing not less than 10 per cent. of silicon, the proportions of the constituents of the mixture being such that the mixture reacts exothermically to form the required alloy and a slag containing lime in at least equi-molecular ratio to the silica. The mixture may also contain an oxidizing salt such as a chromate, nitrate, or chlorate. Other constituents required in the alloy such as nickel, molybdenum, manganese, vanadium, or tungsten, may be incorporated in the mixture as oxides or metals, or may be added to the molten alloy produced. The iron oxide used may be ferric oxide, hematite, mill scale or magnetic oxide ; or iron oxide ores containing other metal oxides may be used. The ferro-chrome-silicon may be obtained by reducing an iron-chromium ore with carbon to form a high-carbon ferrochromium which is remelted with silica. Specification 519,303 is referred to.
